Well, here’s my setup - briefly, it is built around a Korg D32XD, with a bunch of other stuff (almost all of it acquired on the cheap from eBay) - let’s see if I can hotlink this pic:

And here’s a link to a sample of a tune recorded on this setup - my first one, so there’s still work to do ...

Sunday’s Hornpipe

This was recorded on the Bourgeois Guitar, with Elixir Polywebs (I have switched now to nano’s) and the 1926 RB-3 archtop banjo. The rhythm guitar is the old Martin D-28, and the bass is syntheszed with Reason.

Why did you choose the Korg, rather than going with a Pro-Tools type of studio?

Well, I was originally recording on a little four track thing, and I wanted to upgrade to some more tracks and an easier interface. I started looking at various options, but I never intended to turn it into a real studio. I found a great deal for the Korg on eBay and went with that. It is an incredible unit, and in the right hands, I think it can do almost anything. I do use an outboard mic pre and some other stuff, but I don’t think I would have to.

ProTools itself, of course, would run into money I don’t have, and even ProTools LE starts to add up fast. I think there is little if anything that I could do with ProTools LE that I can’t do with this setup.

I have to confess, however, I sometimes use Logic 7 on my PowerBook for some mixing and post stuff, but I do all my tracking on the Korg. Not sure it’s right for everyone, but I love the setup, and put it together on the cheap, as project studios go confused
